Neverness to Everness review — Hethereau gives the character RPG a real city
NTE's vehicles, property and anomaly cases make its urban open world distinctive, while reaction combat and gacha progression create a more familiar long-term structure.

Recommended
Recommended for players who want an explorable anime city around their team RPG; competitive balance and repeatable endgame remain the parts to watch.
Pros
- Hethereau combines driving, vertical exploration and ordinary city activities
- Entry Attacks connect defensive timing with rapid character switching
- Animated characters and anomaly stories give the roster a strong identity
Cons
- Several upgrade and acquisition systems compete for the same attention
- Gacha acquisition limits how freely a new account can reproduce ideal teams
- The long-term quality of repeatable endgame depends on future updates
Hethereau is more than a combat map
NTE's strongest decision is to make a contemporary city the center of the fantasy. Roads support actual vehicles, districts stack streets and rooftops, and property or jobs give the player reasons to notice places outside combat. Anomaly cases then distort the familiar city instead of transporting the party into an unrelated fantasy arena.
That density changes exploration. A short drive can reveal a side activity or environmental story, while fast travel keeps known errands manageable. The city is most convincing when normal life and supernatural work overlap. It is less convincing when several system icons compete to turn the same streets into a checklist.
Switching is the core combat decision
Four Espers share the fight. Basic actions, skills and correct defensive responses build Esper Meter; bringing in a ready character launches an Entry Attack. Compatible effects on the Esper Cycle add reactions, so order matters as much as individual strength.
This creates a readable team-building question: who prepares the state, who enters, and who converts the resulting window? A strong rotation also needs an exit plan for the enemy's next sequence. The system loses clarity when effects and damage fill the screen, but controlled testing against one target makes the relationship between defense, meter and swaps visible.
The roster sells personality and mechanics together
The official character presentation gives each Esper a distinct place in Hethereau rather than describing them only through combat rarity. Eibon staff, Bureau units and other city groups make roster acquisition feel connected to the setting. Their animation and voice presentation are an important part of the appeal.
The practical limitation is acquisition. A team recommendation built around several specific high-rarity characters may not help a fresh account. Early progression should therefore start from roles and cycle compatibility, then use the actual roster instead of treating a showcase team as a requirement.
Free-to-play generosity needs context
Launch rewards can accelerate the first roster, but one-time pulls do not determine the long-term economy. More useful questions are how reliably ordinary play supplies upgrades, how pity and featured acquisition work, and whether new encounters demand a narrow set of units. Players should understand the current board rules before converting scarce currency and avoid treating temporary rewards as recurring income.
Who should play it
Choose NTE if driving through a supernatural city, meeting its residents and building reaction teams sounds more appealing than crossing another wilderness. Players who want a proven multi-year endgame or dislike randomized character acquisition should wait or play cautiously. Hethereau already gives NTE a clear reason to exist; the test over time is whether repeatable activities remain as interesting as discovering the city once.
