Extraction shooter review

STALZONE review — the extraction shooter that never wipes

A persistent, free-to-play Chernobyl Zone with real tension and a huge story, weighed down by a steep learning curve, a busy shop and uneven technical polish.

A firefight in a ruined village in STALZONE

Pros

  • No wipes, so gear, reputation and faction standing carry forward
  • Loot is at risk until extracted, which keeps every trip tense without resetting your character
  • A 50-hour story campaign sits inside the same online world
  • Free to play on Steam, the Epic Games Store and the EXBO launcher

Cons

  • Blocky character art and dated visuals in areas the new lighting has not reached
  • The shop sells Season Pass levels, Premium time and cases, not only cosmetics
  • Years of layered systems and renamed items make the start confusing
  • English voice-over covers only part of the story so far

STALZONE is the game that used to be called STALCRAFT: X, and before that STALCRAFT. It started as a STALKER-themed Minecraft server, and that origin still shows in its blocky characters. Underneath, it has become something unusual: an extraction shooter where your character never resets, set in a shared, persistent Chernobyl Exclusion Zone with a story campaign, faction wars and a player economy.

What it does unusually well

Most extraction shooters wipe progress on a schedule, so every season starts from nothing. STALZONE has not wiped since its current development stage began in December 2020. Your character, equipment, reputation and faction ties persist. What you risk is the loot you pick up on a trip: until you carry it back to safety, another player can take it.

That split is the core of the game. Deaths hurt, but they do not erase months of work. The result is a steady tension that suits players who find wipe-based shooters exhausting.

A shooter that plays like an MMO

You start as a Stalker or a Bandit in the southern Zone and work north through quests, safe zones and increasingly dangerous territory. In the North, players join one of four factions — Rise, Frontier, Mercenaries or Covenant — and the Zone becomes a permanent territorial conflict around areas such as Forge-11.

Around that sit the systems of an online RPG: more than 200 weapons with deep customisation, artefacts with their own economy, a player-driven market, subdivisions for organised groups, ranked Coliseum matches and the ZIVCAS Operations mode. Proximity voice chat means you often hear strangers before you see them, and many encounters become negotiations rather than instant fights.

The story is bigger than you expect

EXBO describes a story campaign of more than 50 hours, built into the online world rather than separated from it. The main line is designed for solo play, so you can follow it without a squad. The June 2026 update reworked the early game, added new faces with lip-sync and began an English voice-over, although it currently covers only the southern storyline.

Where friction appears

The learning curve is the biggest barrier. Twelve years of added systems mean many currencies, regions, faction rules and item grades, and EXBO itself now runs a dedicated onboarding team because new-player experience was a known pain point. EXBO also renamed factions, locations, weapons, mutants and artefacts, so older guides and videos often use different names from the current client. Expect to lean on the community early.

Visually, the game is uneven. The new light-sources system makes updated areas look far better, but it is optional, it is only enabled in some locations, and EXBO warns it can reduce frame rates noticeably on weaker PCs.

Monetisation

STALZONE is free to play, and EXBO describes its shop as cosmetics plus optional progression support. That second part matters. Stalcoins buy Premium time, Season Pass level packs, Coliseum tokens and cases alongside cosmetics. Season Pass progress and seasonal currency are also earned through play, but paying clearly shortens the grind. Purchases are tied to a server region, so choose your region before spending.

Who should play it

Play STALZONE if you want the tension of carrying loot out of a hostile Zone without the reset of a wipe, and if you enjoy long-term goals, faction politics and a living online world. Try the story first; it is the gentlest way in. Skip it if you want short matches, a highly polished shooter, or a single-player STALKER game — those players are better served elsewhere.
