Where Winds Meet combat guide — deflects, Qi, Exhaust and weapon swaps

Read red and gold attacks, break enemy Qi with deflects, land Executes, and use Mystic Skills and weapon swaps without draining your own resources.

Fast Martial Art combat in Where Winds Meet

Quick answer: most fights in Where Winds Meet follow one loop. Deflect the attacks that flash red, dodge the ones that flash gold, and keep deflecting until the enemy's Qi bar empties. The enemy then becomes Exhausted, and you Execute it for heavy damage. Everything else in your build (Martial Arts, Path resources, Inner Ways, Mystic Skills) exists to make that loop faster and safer.

The resources on your screen

Resource What it does How to manage it
Health Reaching zero knocks you out. Medicine restores it. Medicine slots sit next to your Martial Art skills.
Qi Pays for blocking, dodging and other defensive actions. It refills on its own. Spam-dodging and holding block empty it. Well-timed deflects end enemy pressure sooner, which saves Qi.
Insight Powers Assist Deflection and Star Shift. Refills during combat. Save it for attacks you cannot yet read.
Spirit Pays for Mystic Skills. Refills over time. Spend it in recovery windows, not during enemy strings.

Enemies have a Qi bar too. It is the target of your defense.

Read the attack color

  • Red flash: the attack can be deflected, and deflecting it is the point. A successful deflect negates the hit, drains the enemy's Qi and often opens a counter window.
  • Gold flash: the attack cannot be blocked or deflected. Dash away or out of its range.
  • No flash: an ordinary attack. You can block it, dodge it or step out of range, and deflect timing still works on it.

The most common beginner mistake is trying to deflect gold attacks. When you see gold, move.

Deflect, Exhaust, Execute

  1. Deflect by pressing block just before the hit lands, not when the attack starts.
  2. Each deflect drains enemy Qi. Your own attacks and some skills add to the pressure.
  3. When the enemy's Qi reaches zero, it becomes Exhausted: staggered and open.
  4. Execute during that window for a large damage bonus.

Against a boss, spend the first attempt learning which attack in each string is red, which is gold and where the boss pauses. You will win more by landing one deflect-Exhaust-Execute cycle reliably than by extending a combo into an attack you have not learned.

Dodging and Perfect Dodge

Dodging moves you in any direction and costs Qi. A Perfect Dodge, timed just as the hit lands, briefly slows time and gives you a free punish. Slow time does not trigger in PvP or on the hardest difficulties, so do not build a PvP habit around it.

Use dodges for gold attacks, area attacks and repositioning. For red attacks, deflects are the better answer because they also damage the enemy's Qi.

Assist Deflection and Star Shift

Assist Deflection spends Insight to slow time and turn a deflect into a quick-time prompt. It starts enabled for new mobile characters, and it is how many new players get through early bosses. Its limit is your Insight, so it cannot replace learning timing.

Star Shift is a general Mystic Skill you have from the tutorial. It spends Insight to deflect an attack before it lands. You can turn it on or off in the options.

A practical approach is to keep both on while learning a boss, then rely on them less as the pattern becomes familiar.

Martial Arts, weapon swaps and Paths

You fight with two Martial Arts and swap between them mid-combo. Each art has basic attacks, charged or heavy attacks, and skills. The two arts in a Path share one resource or status, so the swap has a purpose. For example, Bamboocut – Draught builds Drunkenness with Riven Twinblades, deepens it with Skystrike Gauntlets and releases it as burst.

Good swap habits:

  • Swap after you have built the resource the other weapon spends, not at random.
  • Swap in a recovery window, not while a red attack is incoming.
  • If you keep dying mid-swap, shorten the rotation until the swap is automatic.

See the Paths guide for every Path and its two Martial Arts.

Mystic Skills in combat

Mystic Skills are special techniques learned through exploration, quests and Skill Theft mini-games. You can equip up to four combat Mystic Skills, and each costs Spirit. Early ones fix specific problems:

  • Tai Chi pulls and spins enemies and is effective against shields.
  • Meridian Touch immobilizes a target and breaks vital points.
  • Celestial Seize disarms an enemy and turns its weapon against it.
  • Cloud Steps stomps on enemies' shoulders and is effective against cavalry.

Pick Mystic Skills for the enemy in front of you. Shielded groups want Tai Chi; a boss you need to hold still wants Meridian Touch. See the Mystic Skills guide for unlock locations.

Difficulty settings

Difficulty controls how punishing enemies are. On mobile, new characters choose Story or Recommended, and Expert unlocks at level 30. A character created on PC with Legend difficulty keeps that setting when played on mobile. Start where learning feels productive and raise difficulty once deflects are consistent.

Why you are losing (and what to change)

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Qi runs out and you get guard-broken Holding block or panic dodging Deflect red attacks, dodge only gold ones
You take damage when deflecting Pressing too early Deflect at impact, not when the attack starts
Medicine runs out before the boss's Qi does Attacking during strings Attack only in pauses and after Executes
Damage feels low even when you survive Path resource not built or not spent Practice the swap order against ordinary enemies
Mystic Skills are never ready Spirit spent on low-value casts Save Spirit for the skill that fixes this fight

Change one thing between attempts. When you can say which change won the fight, you can repeat it.
