The Esper Cycle, Explained

NTE's reactions only fire between compatible effects, so team order matters.

TierBuff·Beginner·~7 min·Published 2026-09-06·Applies to Launch build

NTE Espers combining attacks during an anomaly encounter

Start with the reaction, then choose the team

Pick the reaction you want to trigger before choosing three favourite characters. One character applies the setup, another triggers it, and the final slot sustains or amplifies the result.

Order matters

Opening with the trigger wastes the window. Apply the setup first, swap during the visible cue, then commit the high-damage skill.

Test against one consistent target

Use the same encounter when comparing teams. Changing both the enemy and the rotation hides whether an improvement came from the build or the matchup.

Read a failed reaction

When the expected reaction does not appear, check whether the setup remained active, whether the incoming Esper Meter was ready, and whether the two effects connect on the current cycle. Changing the roster before identifying the missing condition makes the next test harder to interpret.

Practice without spending every ultimate. A sequence that works only from full resources will collapse in a longer encounter. Establish a short repeatable loop, then add expensive attacks to the window where the reaction and enemy state support them.

Measure consistency as well as peak damage. Count how often the intended reaction appears, whether the main attacker receives a safe opening, and whether the team can rebuild the loop after its first burst. The strongest early team is the one that executes reliably with the characters and resources actually available.

Use upgrades to fix the observed limit

If the setup expires before the entry connects, improve execution or the setup character rather than adding damage to the finisher. If the reaction appears reliably but the target survives the window, invest in the character converting it. If the team cannot repeat, solve recovery and meter generation. This order turns upgrades into answers instead of guesses.

Recheck the cycle when adding a new Esper. Replacing one member can alter two transitions, so test the entry before and after that slot instead of assuming the rest of the rotation remains intact.
